Health effects of insomnia


Many adults today and even some teens are having a very hard time falling asleep at night. One of the most common sleeping disorders that most people are experiencing today is insomnia. Insomnia has been defined as a condition where our natural pattern of sleep is disturbed. It is a state wherein you experience an inadequate quality and amount of sleep. We can categorize two types of insomnia: the primary and the secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia refers to sleep disturbances that occur without any specific underlying condition that causes insomnia while the secondary insomnia is a condition that has a cause for the sleeping disorder.

Some of secondary insomnia includes Sleep apnea. It is a disorder causing difficulty in breathing during sleep that produces snoring, followed by breath gasping. Sleep-wake schedule are mostly experienced by night-shift workers which is caused by having schedules that do not match up with the natural sleep schedule. Restless leg syndrome is characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs or feet that usually occur at night. Insomnia could also be caused by some medical conditions. Medications for some illness like heart diseases, arthritis, hypertension or Parkinson’s diseases could cause sleep disorders. Emotional problems, depression, anxiety and stress could also cause insomnia.

The effects of insomnia could impact a person’s overall safety and health that can affect every area of your life. It can cause you difficulties with memory, logic, reasoning and concentration. It could also make you feel irritable, fatigued, stressed and forgetful. Your performance level in your workplace will surely drop. In some chronic cases, severe insomnia causes people to experience hallucination. Not getting enough sleep or no sleep at all could make you very vulnerable to many illness and infections and could put your health in great danger.

Finding what is causing the insomnia and dealing with it can help life return to normal. It might take sometime to get to the root cause, but doing so can be vital for you. Science had offered some solutions to aid this kind of sleeping disorder. There are many sleeping aid available today that could help you get the right quality and amount of sleep. Just be sure to know the side effects for you and do your own research. Remember that natural health products could give you quality results minus the side effects. Put in mind that sleep is very essential for our survival.
